Environmental Health Specialist

Curry Community Health is looking to hire an Environmental Health Specialist to work in Curry County Oregon, located in a beautiful community on the Southern Oregon Coast. This is a full time position offering health benefits (medical, dental, vision), holiday pay, paid time off as well as life insurance and 403b.

The Environmental Health Specialist works for Curry Community Health (CCH) to provide environmental health services to include inspections in Curry County at various locations. The EHS provides inspection services for food establishments, swimming pools, lodging to include RV Parks. The EHS is also responsible for drinking water system reviews and compliance, epidemiological outbreaks as identified by the Public Health Administrator, health hazards, and food handler’s courses. Works under the direction of the Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS).

Some Responsibilities include:

  1. Inspects and approves licensed food service facilities, lodging, public swimming pools, RV Parks, day care centers, and school food facilities.

  2. Regulates, reviews, and ensures compliance for public drinking water systems.

  3. At the direction of the PHA, investigates communicable disease outbreaks related to food, water, or other environmental causes.

  4. Review and approve new food service facilities and/or changes to existing food service facilities.

  5. Provides Food Handler Training in Curry County based on need and in compliance with current statutory requirements.

  6. Utilizes the required electronic reporting programs that maintains licenses, inspections, and violation data for Curry County facilities.  

  7. Participates in emergency training and educational programs and is a vital part of the CCH Emergency Action Team.

  8. Investigates complaints regarding licensed public facilities and/or health hazards.  Provides citations and monitors corrective action plans until compliance is achieved.  

  9. Ensures compliance with local state, and federal reporting requirements.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, excluding paid holidays. Normal work hours are 8:00am-5:00pm.

Work Location: Office based in Brookings and Gold Beach, OR. Requires travel within Curry County using a company vehicle.


  • Must possess a current driver’s license, pass a pre-employment drug test, and pass the criminal background check required by the State of Oregon.

  • Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel basic accounting principles.  

  • Two potential qualification requirements:

    Environmental Health Specialist

  • Environmental health specialists must have one of the following combinations of education and training to obtain registration in Oregon:

  • Bachelor's degree from a university or college with at least 45 quarter-hours of science background in environmental sanitation and two years of experience in environmental health working under the supervision of an environmental health specialist

  • Or, a graduate degree in community health or public health and one year of experience in environmental health working under the supervision of an environmental health specialist

  • Reciprocity: Bachelor's or graduate degree as noted above and affidavit of licensure demonstrating proof of current active registration with no current or pending disciplinary action. The registration must have been issued by a regulatory body of another state or a national association recognized by the board.

    Environmental Health Trainee

  • Applicants who do not meet the work experience requirements but who meet the educational requirements may obtain a trainee license. Each combination of education and experience has a specific training period (as specified above).

  • A trainee may take the written examination before completion of the required work experience but must take the Oregon Laws and Rules examination before a trainee registration will be issued.

Pay Range:  $20 to $26 per hour
